Here is the link to the Article of the Week with color maps: The Invisible Borders that Define American Culture. Make Sure to summarize using the MAIN IDEA (Thesis) and some key points. Dig deep in your response. Be specific. This week we talked about Production, Distribution, and Consumption. Here is a video that can help you understand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRAfkwGGpJU We also talked about the Governor (http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/government-politics/governor) and the branches of government (https://www.usa.gov/branches-of-government). Nothing can make up for paying attention in class....but these resources should help. Week of 08/15 - 08/19This is the first week of Social Studies content at Utopian.
"Article of the Week" - The Other Student Activists - The Atlantic Students should read the article during the course of the week and write a 1/2 - 3/4 page response. Part of the response should be a summary of the main points of the article. Part of the response should be the students personal feelings about what they have read. This can be hand written, but should be written clearly and with good grammar and punctuation. Articles will be passed out on Monday and are due on Friday. Conflict and Change: How do people of Different Backgrounds View Racial Equality? The student will understand that when there is conflict between or within societies, change is the result. When you have conflicts with your friends does it change your friendship? If so, how? Why do you make changes in your life? Why does change always follow conflict? Distribution of Power and Governance: The student will understand that distribution of power in government is a product of existing documents and laws combined with contemporary value and beliefs. Why is the power structure at your school set up the way it is? How is power divided in your family? The student will understand that as a society increases in complexity and interacts with other societies, the complexity of the government also increases. How might rules, responsibilities, and expectations change when there is a change in your family (new sibling, divorce, grandparent moving in)? How do rules change in sports from when you are young to professional sports? |
